Release Number: 010512
5/30/2012 - HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- In response to heavy smoke created by fires burning north of Hurlburt Field, non-essential base personnel, determined by unit commanders, will delay reporting to duty until after 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 30.
As a result of the delayed reporting, base services will be postponed and all on-base appointments prior to 10:30 a.m. have been cancelled. Individuals with appointments scheduled later than 10:30 a.m. should call to confirm their appointment availability.
According to Maj. Barbara Cain, 1st Special Operations Medical Group chief nurse, there are generally no significant health concerns associated with short durations of exposure to the smoke overlying the area. However, if individuals experience difficulty breathing or other adverse effects of the smoke, they should seek medical attention immediately.
Major Cain also mentioned that personnel should minimize exposure by remaining indoors with the air conditioning on, keeping all windows and doors closed, avoiding physical exertion during smoky conditions, and staying hydrated.
Additional information regarding delayed services will be posted on the official Hurlburt Field Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/HurlburtFieldOfficial) and website (www.hurlburt.af.mil) as it becomes available.
For more information regarding the fire, contact Mike Spaits, Eglin Air Force Base environmental spokesman, at (850)-882-2836.
