Legal Office Hour Changes
- The legal office will have minimum manning during the week of 17-21 Oct 11. As a result, the following services will not be available: Oct. 19, 2011 (Wednesday): Walk-in Legal Assistance from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 20, 2011, (Thursday): Walk-in Will services from 1 to 3 p.m. Walk-in legal assistance will be available on Monday, 17 Oct, but expect a longer wait time. National Take Back Initiative - Got Drugs? The 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron and the 1st Special Operations Medical Support Squadron are hosting the Drug Enforcement Administration's "National Prescription Drug Take Back Day" at the Hurlburt Field commissary Oct. 29, 2011. Individuals can drop off unused or expired prescription medication from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the day of the event. Organizers prefer medication be dropped off in prescription bottles. However, if bottles are unavailable please inform base security that you are entering the base for the take back program at the commissary.

"It's Fire Prevention Week. Protect your Family from Fire!"-  
The Hurlburt Field Fire Emergency Service is proud to announce that National Fire Prevention Week will be observed on Hurlburt Field from Sunday Oct. 9, to Friday Oct.14, 2011. National Fire Prevention Week marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, which happened on Oct. 9, 1871. 

To focus on the importance of National Fire Prevention Week, Hurlburt Field will be holding the following activities:

· Saturday October 8: Beginning at 9 a.m., a fire truck parade will travel through the Soundside, Pine Shadows, Live Oaks and Commando Village housing areas. The parade will be led by Grand Marshall 1 SOMSG/CC Col. Curt Van De Walle and Sparky the Fire Dog.

· Sunday October 9: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Sparky and Fire Engine will be at the Commissary and Base Exchange handing out small treats.

· Monday October 10: Holiday (No Activities)

· Tuesday October 11: 6 - 6:45 a.m.  front gate with Sparky.

AFSO 21 PROCESS IMPROVEMENT PROJECT - Are you an active duty Airmen and have a process improvement project suggestion? The 1st Special Operations Wing is looking for process improvement projects and will give a three day pass to all suggestions selected.

The submitted process must:

1. Be within the 1st SOW commander's ability to make a change. Air Force Special Operations Command Headquarters and Air Force level processes are outside 1st SOW's scope.

2. Exhibit one or more of the eight major types of waste:

a. The process routinely produces defects
b. The process produces more than anyone needs
c. People, paperwork, or parts spend excessive time waiting
d. The process does more than anyone needs or cares about
e. Material gets needlessly moved around a lot
f. The process does not take advantage of an individual's specialized skills or knowledge
g. People spend excessive amounts of time walking around
h. The process creates large amounts of inventory that end up sitting for long periods of time

Indicators of a broken process may include:

1. Personnel have trouble keeping up with the workload
2. Error corrections are routine
3. Personnel regularly missing deadlines
4. Personnel work extra hours in order to keep up with the workload

DANTES SUBJECT STANDARDIZED TEST (DSST) FOR SPEECH IS NOW AVAILABLE IN A NEW FORMAT
Exciting news! The DANTES DSST for Principals of Public Speaking is now available as an Internet-Based Test. Computers, equipped with microphones allow examinees to deliver the speech portion of the test. The objective portion of the exam will be administered in the same format as other DSST Internet-Based Tests. *Note - Services offered for Active Duty and reservists only. Health Professions Scholarship Program is looking for Physician Assistants
The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) is now accepting applications for active duty officers and cadets accepted into accredited Master of Physician Assistant Programs (MPAS), beginning 1 Oct., 2011 through 25 March, 2012. The HPSP, which requires a minimum service obligation of three years, provides students with monthly living stipends and pays for tuition, books and most fees. NEW WALK-IN SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR CLEP & DANTES
Beginning May 17: walk-in services for CLEP & DANTES will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 AM, and 11:30 AM. Testing is located in Building 90220, in Classroom B. The DSST Principals of Public Speaking objective portion of the test is also available at 8 AM, and 11:30 AM. Examinees taking the Speech exam will be administered the speech delivery portion of the test at 2:30 PM. CCAF DEGREE
Would you like to be awarded your CCAF degree? Your CCAF progress report may reflect that you are very close to completing your CCAF degree requirements.  You may complete your degree by either taking college courses or CLEP/DANTES exams. If you would like to be awarded your CCAF Associate Degree in Applied Science, your requirements need to be completed before you separate or retire. Please contact the education office at 884-6724 to discuss your CCAF progress.

FAA EXAM
Active duty, retirees and DoD civilians that have FAA FORM 8610-2 may schedule the FAA Aviation Mechanic-Airframe (AMA), Aviation Mechanic -General (AMG), or Aviation Mechanic -Powerplant (AMP) tests at the education office. Call 884-6724 for more information.

AFCLC announces upcoming LEAP selection board
The Air Force Culture and Language Center  would like to announce the next Language Enabled Airman Program selection board. Application criteria will be released on July 5, 2011, and application packets will be accepted through Sept. 5. The selection board is scheduled to take place at Maxwell AFB on Sept. 14 and 15. Board members will consist of representatives from across the Air Force language community, including AF/A1, AF/A2, AF ISR Agency, AF SOC, USAFA, Jeanne M. Holm Center for Officer Accessions & Citizen Development, Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and AFCLC. The AFCLC will notify applicants of their acceptance no later than Oct. 17. The selection board is open to active duty officers (O-3 and under) as well as officer candidates. Applicants must possess an ILR proficiency level of 2/2 or better in a strategic language and demonstrate an interest in furthering the Air Force mission. ERAU REGISTRATION FOR ONLINE COURSES
Registration for in-residence and online courses is going on now for both Graduate and Undergraduate students. CLOSED: Commando Fitness Center
The Commando Fitness Center is closed for renovations and upgrades with an expected re-opening date of on or around Oct. 1, 2011. The Parent & Tots room has been relocated to a racquetball court in the Aderholt Fitness Center. QUARTERLY BASE AWARD PROGRAM
The Air Force is continuously looking for new and/or improved processes to maximize workplace efficiency and mission effectiveness. Manpower and Organization, 1st SOFSS, provides information and guidance on award programs. The Innovative Development through Employee Awareness (IDEA) program is an incentive program that recognizes eligible Air Force employees for creative and innovative ideas that foster improvement, economics, and productivity. Cash awards range from $200 to $10,000.

Two Productivity Enhancing Capital Investment (PECI) programs are defined and resourced by Air Force within the Planning, Programming, and Budgeting System: Productivity Investment Fund (PIF) and the Fast Payback Capital Investment (FASCAP) programs.

Basic Officer Training Commissioning Program
The Air Force Active Duty Basic Officer Training commissioning program (also known as OTS) is open to Active Duty Enlisted members. AFSO 21 - USAREUR Driver's License
Members PCSing to Germany within the next six months may take their USAREUR license test before leaving. PCS orders and a valid stateside license are required to take the test. For more information, call the test proctor at the Hurlburt Field Education Center at  884-6970.

Emergency information update available online
Anyone who has a Florida driver's license or identification card can register or update their emergency contact information online for free. The contact information entered into this Web site lets law enforcement personnel know who to contact in case of an accident or other emergency. Registration takes about two minutes to complete. To start the process, log on to www.flhsmv.gov/eci and enter the license or ID number. The site provides directions on how to enter contact information for one or two emergency contacts. Those who can't access the internet can update their information by visiting their local driver's license office.

SRB announcement 
Headquarters Air Force announced the following changes to the selective reenlistment bonus program: The new policy authorizes SRB payments to a maximum of $90,000 per zone for SRB-authorized specialties. No Air Force Specialty Codes currently authorized an SRB wil be authorized a lower mulitplier in any zone.

New Finance customer service hours
The 1st Special Operations Comptroller Squadron Customer Service counter hours are 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. To better serve the customer, the 1 SOCPTS also offers one-on-one appointments daily from 12 - 4 p.m. To request appointments or inquire about pay, customers are encouraged to contact the 1st SOCPTS via email . There will also be a drop box for travel vouchers or other military pay documents located next to the Self-Help kiosk in the Customer Service lobby. Money for CCAF graduates 
Community College of the Air Force students graduating this year may apply for a one-time grant of $500. The Air Force Association's Pitsenbarger Award is given to select, top enlisted Airmen pursuing a bachelor's degree. New post-deployment/mobilization respite absence
Personnel may earn administrative absence credit for deploying more than 365 days in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom in a 36 month period. No credit is authorized for deployed service earlier than Jan. 19, 2004. For more information, call 884-4457.

Thrift shop
The thrift shop on base offers a variety of items ranging from antiques and collectibles to clothing and toys. Consignments are available for anyone with a valid military ID. All proceeds go to scholarships and charities in and around Hurlburt Field. All donations are accepted. The shop is always in need of volunteers to help run the store. Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 884-3098.

AWC and ACSC examination process
Air War College and Air Command and Staff students must order their examinations online before scheduling a testing session with the education center. The exam must be ordered through the Air University Student Information System and posted into the Course Development and Student Administration/Registrar System before the test examiner can administer the test. There are no exceptions to this Air Force Institute for Advanced Distributed Learning directive. For more information, call 884-6724 or refer to the student handbook.

Thinking about carpooling?
The West Florida Regional Planning Council's Ride On program offers an opportunity for drivers to share their commuting responsibilities to and from base with other drivers. Once drivers are signed up, the program will automatically match them with other drivers with similar schedules and routes. Air Force Best Practices
The Air Force is continuously looking for new and/or improved processes in order to maximize workplace efficiency and mission effectiveness. One way in which the Air Force accomplishes this is through the submission of best practices. To submit a best practice, individuals can access the Best Practices Clearinghouse on the Air Force Manpower Agency Web site, https://www.afma.randolph.af.mil, which offers all the information needed to successfully submit a package. Once the package is complete, submit it to the Manpower and Organization Flight in Bldg. 90210, Room 134, for review and validation. For more information, call 884-6805.

DOS Briefing
The DOS briefing has permanently moved to the DCC auditorium in Bldg. 90802. Briefings will be held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for in-brief and 1 p.m. for out-brief/badge replacement.
